Subtitled is a personal response to the contradictory relationship that includes both the enjoyment of clichés in mainstream entertainment and resentment of their authority in the everyday.
From familiar scenes in 19th century novels to Brat Pack movies of the 1980s and beyond, the modes of behaviour demonstrated when falling in love or being seduced go on to inform generations of girls as they grow into young women.
Subtitled considers the ongoing influence of these experiences.
Long film exposures enable more than one position in the self-portraits, blurring the remembered ‘real’ with multiple referents in popular fiction and film.
